How Montréal is tackling the climate crisis

Montréal is taking action on climate change, with stakeholders all over the city joining forces and creating initiatives to tackle the climate crisis. In this round table, Mayor Valérie Plante and her fellow panellists will review and discuss the progress the city has made on the climate front, and the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead. There will also be some big announcements about how Montréal plans to lead the way to a greener and healthier future.

Between flooding and extreme heat waves, the effects of climate change are already being felt in Montréal. The IPCC’s latest report has made it clear: we need to drastically step up our adaptation efforts, and we need to do it now. A piecemeal approach to climate action is not going to cut it anymore. With that in mind, where does the city stand in its adaptation planning? What is it doing to adapt? And what are the next steps it should take to scale up its efforts?

In this workshop, participants will be brought up to speed on what progress Montréal has made on the adaptation measures in the city’s Climate Plan, and they will learn about some impactful community initiatives that are underway. Together they will brainstorm quick, concrete steps that the city can take to develop a unified adaptation strategy to help the municipality, civil society, and every neighbourhood, business and institution, preserve our local ecosystems and quality of life.

The second largest source—nearly 30%—of Montréal’s greenhouse gas emissions is from heating residential, commercial, and institutional buildings. This is why the City of Montréal is working to achieve carbon neutrality for all municipal buildings, for all new buildings within its jurisdiction by 2030, and for all existing buildings within its jurisdiction by 2050.

Workshop attendees will hear several inspiring accounts of building decarbonization and zero in on what factors will make this ambition a reality for Montréal.

The workshop will focus mainly on alternatives to fossil fuels that can be used to power buildings and manage grid capacity, and how energy efficiency and conversion measures can be combined without neglecting to take other actions to decarbonize and adapt buildings for climate change.

Not just a fad: The next generation of eco-minded entrepreneurs

Hosted by the Junior Chamber of commerce of Montréal

With sustainability already a core concern for many new entrepreneurs, this panel will explore how businesses have a key role to play in Montréal’s efforts to go green. Attendees will hear from young entrepreneurs whose stories can serve as inspiration for large organizations looking for ways to fight climate change.

The panellists will start by providing real‑world examples of projects that build on a vision and values that align with their climate goals, in areas ranging from decarbonization to sustainable mobility. They will then discuss what is currently being done in Montréal to encourage businesses to take concrete climate action, what more needs to be done, and how start‑ups would like to see big businesses and decision‑makers address climate change.

Workshop 3
Green taxation for climate: Where to begin?

Hosted by Institut du Québec

Green taxation is an essential tool for funding climate transition and encouraging climate-friendly behaviour. It also enables municipalities to kill two birds with one stone by diversifying their tax base and reducing their dependence on property taxes.

Montréal currently makes very little use of green taxation, however. There are significant implementation and operational costs, and green tax measures are often hindered by limited social and political buy-in.This workshop will address a number of basic questions: What is green taxation? How can it help Montréal achieve its climate goals? Where can we start to make sure green taxation does the most good?

We will also hold a discussion on what green tax measures have already been taken in Montréal and what future ones would be the best ways to support the city in making the climate transition and achieving its climate targets.

Workshop 4
Electrification of downtown mobility

Hosted by Propulsion Québec

Road transportation is currently Montréal’s largest source of GHG emissions, coming in at around 30% of the city’s total emissions. The City of Montréal’s efforts to decrease these emissions include electrifying transportation, setting up a zero emission zone downtown by 2030 and rolling out a pilot project for a low emission zone in the nearer term.

This workshop will give an overview of what other cities are doing and lay out some innovative approaches to rethinking mobility of people and products. We will hold a discussion to identify winning conditions and important milestones for successfully creating a metropolitan zero emission zone without compromising residents’ quality of life or Montréal’s cultural and economic vibrancy.

All sectors of society will need to pitch in for climate transition to succeed. This is especially true for Montréal, whose greenhouse gas reduction goals are central to achieving Québec’s climate goals.

This panel will bring together leaders from the corporate world and from major institutions in a variety of sectors. They will share concrete examples of recent and upcoming climate transition initiatives. They will discuss what they’ve learned and share their thoughts on how to mobilize other organizations and companies to take a more active role in climate transition efforts.
